São Paulo, Brazil: Home of the World's Largest Pride Celebration

Brazil's largest city São Paulo is the very definition of a megalopolis. Covering more than 3,067.2 sqare miles, the city has an estimated population of 21,616,060 people, which makes it the largest city in South America and the third largest metropolitan area in the world. It should come as no surprise then that yesterday São Paulo hosted the world's largest LGBTQ Pride celebration. While crowd counts are still being finalized, it is estimated that up to three million people, including 400,000 tourists, crowded along the 3-kilometer stretch of Paulista Avenue, the city's main thoroughfare, to celebrate. By comparison, Gay Pride yesterday in Rome, Italy, saw only about 50,000 participants while approximately 1,500 people attended the Pride celebration in Warsaw, Poland. For the past 13 years, Brazilian politicians have worked very hard to throw a party that keeps bringing gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered individuals along with their friends and families back year after year. This year, José Serra, governor of the state of São Paulo and early favorite to win the Brazilian presidency next year, attended the festivities and publicly promised his support for same-sex civil unions. See the amazing crowds who gathered yesterday in São Paulo in the video clip (after the jump).

Sao Paulo

Loved this story! Thanks for posting it. I did not know the Brazilian LGBT community was so strong, large, and organized.

One correction: Sao Paulo is not the capital of Brazil. Brasilia is the capital.

Thanks - fixed

Fixed.

Sāo Paulo Pride Celebration

You probably ought to throw in a sentence or two about the uncharacteristic violence that marred this year's festivities. There were an unusually high number of personal thefts/robberies during the parade, and there was a bomb explosion that injured 22 people. I have attended the 2007 and 2008 events... had a wonderful time. Perhaps 1/2 of the spectators are straight (Brazileiros love to party... they do not need much of an excuse).
