School-Sponsored Sex Toy Parties Cause Stir At Duke
Researchers at Duke University have caused something of a flap after one behavioral economist advertised last month for study subjects. The study, a look into home sex toy parties, sought female students "view sex toys and engage in sexually explicit conversation with other female Duke students," reports The News Observer.
Females recruited for the study will be required to answer a few surveys about their sexual attitudes and behaviors, and must then attend a simulated sex-toy party. Participants in the study would receive a gift bag and a discount on sex toys.
The point is to see from an economic and public health perspective whether or not sex toys might be an effective alternative to promiscuity. It was created by university health professionals and economics professor Dan Ariely.
But the ads for the study caught the eye Father Joe Vetter, the director of the Duke Catholic Center. "My concern is these students are in this developmental phase, and I don't think it's a good developmental practice to just tell somebody to just sit around and masturbate. I don't think that promotes relationships." Despite Vetter's qualms, however, the university plans to continue the study.
