100 Lashes for Extra-Marital Sex on Tropical Vacation Island
Comparative morality is an interesting subject. In some communities extra marital sex is just fun. In others the punishment is 100 news articles and an indefinite period of mocking by late night comics. In the Maldives it's 100 lashes and a year of house arrest, if you are a woman that is.
The Maldives, a small country in composed of 1192 small islands in the Indian Ocean and a popular holiday destination, is a signatory to the to both the Convention Against Torture and the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture which prohibit punishment that causes severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental. However that didn't stop Judge Abdulla Mohamed, chief judge of the Criminal Court from handing down a sentence of 100 lashes and a year of house arrest to 18 year old Rahma Abdulla for extramarital sex with two men. Neither of the men were punished because Judge Abdulla said the courts could not prosecute as Rahma was unable to provide any details about the first man and the second man denied his involvement!
So if you were thinking of taking a vacation in the Maldives we strongly suggest you don't until they clean up their human rights act, and if you do go make sure you are married!

why did they do it this way
