Murdered Sailor a Victim of "Don't Ask Don't Tell"?

August ProvostThe murder of a sailor at the Camp Pendleton Marine base near San Diego, CA, is increasingly looking like a hate crime. A local TV station is reporting that the sailor, August Provost of Houston, Texas, was killed during an argument with another sailor over his sexual orientation. Provost, 29, was found dead in a guard shack at 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday according to a Navy spokesman. Although investigators have not officially ruled the death a homicide, they have confirmed that an unnamed "person of interest" is under arrest and being held in the base brig.

The head of the San Diego chapter of American Veterans for Equal Rights, Ben Gomez, said he and other local activists believe Provost's death was a hate crime. On his MySpace page, Provost made references to same-sex dating and identified another Houston man as "the love of my life."

This sailor's blood is on the hands of the Administration for refusing to repeal the crazy "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, which stigmatizes gay service members and fosters hostility and suspicion. The policy needs to go, and it needs to go now. [SanDiego6.com]
